The Long Quiet

A generation ship four centuries into a voyage no one alive began — and no one alive will end.

The Ark Meridian has been under way for four hundred and eleven years. It is a city the size of a mountain, sealed and turning, carrying the great-great-grandchildren of people who chose to leave a world none of the living have seen, bound for one none of the living will reach. Everyone aboard is born to the voyage and will die on it; only the ship remembers both ends of the journey, and the ship does not gossip.

Life is orderly, close, and quiet — the long quiet of people who have made peace with a horizon that is always exactly the same distance away. There are farms in the light-decks and cold in the outer ones. There are charts of every corridor. There is the Purpose, taught to every child: we carry the world forward. And there are, if you go looking, small discrepancies — decks that appear on no map, corridors longer inside than out, records that don’t quite add up — which most people are sensible enough not to go looking for.

Ground rules

  • Hard-ish, human-scaled SF. No aliens, no faster-than-light miracles. The wonder is scale, time, sealed ecology, and the slow mystery of a machine older than anyone’s memory.
  • The ship keeps secrets structurally — in its architecture, its records, its silences. Mystery is discovery, not the supernatural.
  • Time is the antagonist and the marvel — generations, drift, the weight of a purpose no one chose.

Texture

Recycled air and grow-lamp violet. The hum of the turning hull. Numbered decks, laminated charts, the smell of the farm-decks and the cold of the dark ones. Ritual, rationing, and routine.

Recurring forces

  • The Purpose — the ship’s founding mission, taught as gospel; the thing a curious mind starts to doubt.
  • The Cartographers’ Office — keepers of the ship’s maps, and therefore of what’s official.

Seeds

  • A cartographer who finds a deck that isn’t on any chart.
  • The generation that discovers the ship slowed down a century ago and no one was told.
  • A recording of the founders, meant never to be played.
